Community Voices

Past Lectures & Discussions

The Center for the Study of Languages and Cultures offered an innovative program, Community Voices, which synthesizes language, cultural, and community-based academic support for Notre Dame’s foreign language students. We bring key members of Michiana’s international and foreign-language communities to Notre Dame to present on their organizations and to share their personal experiences and expertise. Following the guests’ presentation, interactive discussion with the audience provides a forum for intercultural exchange.

Community Voices Format

The format of Community Voices requires presenters to share their information and expertise in their native language (for the majority of the presentation) and in English. The presentations are followed by meaningful cross-cultural discussions with the presenters and Notre Dame students.

Program Objectives

  • Authentic and spontaneous language exposure and exchange
  • Intercultural exchange and reflection
  • Community-based learning
  • Increased student engagement in the Michiana community

Partners & Events

We work closely with foreign language departments on the content and moderation of each Community Voices event to maximize exposure to and engagement with the foreign language and culture.
