Online Language Learning: SpeakApps to LMOOCs

Language learning for most is an active practice, which is facilitated by knowledge of the language and the development of specific language competencies and skills (Bárcena and Martín-Monje 2014). Decades of theoretical and empirical research into Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL) posits that technology can and does assist the language learner in this process. However, Chapelle (2009) in her analysis of the integration of technology within the traditional classroom discouragingly concludes that CALL remains on the edge of mainstream practice. This lecture provides an overview of the research of Dr. Mairéad Nic Giolla Mhichil into online language learning ranging from Language Learning MOOCs or LMOOCs to technologies to support oral language production.
