La Rue Cases Nègres / Sugar Cane Alley (1983) is set in Martinique in the 1930s, when Africans working the sugar cane fields were treated harshley by their white employers. It is based on the semi-autobiographical novel by Joseph Zobel. Among the many awards the film received was the International Catholic Organization for Cinema and Audiovisual (OCIC) award.
