This semester, the CSLC has started a new program called the Conversation Partner Program–a simple idea with an incredible impact. By pairing international students seeking more practice with native English speakers, the program creates opportunities for language growth, intercultural exchange, and meaningful connections.
The English for Academic Purposes (EAP) Conversation Partner Program matches international graduate and undergraduate students with volunteers, such as other students or staff, who want to help others practice English in a comfortable, supportive environment. Partners meet weekly for informal conversations, usually for half an hour, and choose their own activities and discussion topics. Many international students in this program are enrolled in EAP courses, but formal participation in the program is not required to take advantage of this opportunity.
For international students, strong English communication skills are essential not just for academic success but also for building confidence in social and professional settings. Classroom learning alone cannot provide enough hours to go through the variety of nuances, idioms, and spontaneous language that everyday conversation offers. That’s where the Conversation Partner Program comes in.
EAP carefully pairs participants based on availability, interests, and communication goals. Once matched, partners receive guidance and optional conversation prompts from the CSLC, though most pairs quickly find their own rhythm. The program emphasizes flexibility—partners choose the schedule, location, and topics that work best for them. The program also seeks to help American students wanting to practice their foreign language skills to be paired with international students who are native speakers of those languages so that they can mutually benefit.
At its heart, the EAP Conversation Partner Program is about connection. In a busy academic environment, it creates dedicated time to slow down, listen, learn, and build relationships that cross cultural and linguistic boundaries. Participants also have access to additional CSLC and EAP resources—such as language tutoring and monthly workshops on pronunciation or academic communication.
Students and faculty/staff interested in becoming conversation partners—or international students hoping to be matched with one—should contact the EAP program director, Dr. E. Julia Kim. No prior teaching or tutoring experience is required; just curiosity, patience, and a willingness to show up each week. Whether you want to support international classmates, develop your communication skills, or simply meet someone with a completely different perspective on the world, the program offers a welcoming place to start.
About the CSLC
The Center for the Study of Languages and Cultures (CSLC) aims to support language learners at ND by facilitating meaningful experiences with linguistic acquisition and exchange - both in our campus community and abroad. We believe that access to the world's languages and cultures allows us to seek out new perspectives, to value the diversity of the world's cultures, and to embody global citizenship.
