OPI/OPIc Language Testing

Every Spring, the CSLC tests all graduating language majors and supplementary (or minors when no major is available). Students are tested using Oral Proficiency Interviews (OPI) / Oral Proficiency Interviews by Computer (OPIc) offered by Language Testing International (LTI). As the exclusive licensee of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL), LTI offers graduating Notre Dame seniors external accreditation based on the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines.

Test Format

The ACTFL OPI/OPIc is a standardized oral proficiency exam designed by the American Council on The Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL). The exam consists of a telephone or computer conversation between a certified tester and an examinee. Testers compare the examinee’s oral performance of specific communication tasks with proficiency criteria identified by ACTFL.

For more information regarding the test, please visit the ACTFL website.
