English for Academic Purposes (EAP)

Discover Academic English. Discover you.

Two students discussing feedback in an EAP class

All languages have many registers: different ways we use our languages that depend on context. Academic English is the register of English spoken and written in professional academic contexts. The way we write a paper for a journal publication is distinctly different from how we write a text to a friend. The way we speak when giving a research presentation at a conference is not the same as the way we speak at family gatherings. These are both examples of contexts when the register of Academic English is expected and required. If you are not confident in your skill or ability to access this specific register of English, the EAP is where you need to be.

How EAP can serve you

Courses

We offer official coursework in EAP, focusing on accessing specific linguistic skills within the Academic English register: pronunciation/presenting and writing. EAP courses are open to both graduate and undergraduate students. To take any of these courses, you need to be eligible to register as a student at the University and add the course to your schedule during your designated registration period. University staff, faculty, or postdocs are also welcome to register but should verify access to their tuition benefit before enrolling.

Resources & Support

The EAP program offers many resources, including one-on-one tutoring and relevant workshops, open to the Notre Dame community. We also collaborate with colleagues to support biweekly social/conversational meetups through the English Conversation Tables. You do not have to be enrolled in an EAP course to take advantage of these resources!
