Course Descriptions
All four semesters of Swahili language (Beginning I to Intermediate II) are offered each fall and spring semester so students can begin or pick up their language sequence whenever they'd like.
If you have taken Kiswahili before at another institution and would like to be evaluated for a placement into an appropriate language level, please email cslcstaff@nd.edu.

- CSLC 10101/60001: Beginning Kiswahili I
This course provides a basic introduction to the Swahili language and culture, focusing on reinforcing the four basic skills, which are Speaking, Listening, Reading, and Writing. It also seeks to develop Interpersonal, Presentational, and Interpretive communication in the language.
No prior knowledge of Kiswahili is required.
Who can register?
This course is open to graduate and undergraduate students, but each student should register for the proper course code:
CSLC 10101 is for undergraduate students
CSLC 60001 is for graduate studentsMeeting Pattern
This course meets three times per week for 50 minutes (MWF).
Grading Scale
This course uses the standard letter (A-F) grading scale, but may be audited by graduate students. Be sure to complete all of The Graduate School's required procedures to audit the course before that semester's deadline.
Credit Information
This course is 4 credits and counts towards undergraduate student language requirements.

- CSLC 10102/60002: Beginning Kiswahili II
Building on Kiswahili I foundations, students will continue to practice the four main linguistic skill areas: reading, writing, listening, and speaking by building vocabulary, engaging in role plays and simulated conversations, writing for the purpose of achieving tasks, and gist listening.
Pre-requisite: Beginning Kiswahili I or equivalent

- CSLC 20201/60201: Intermediate Kiswahili I
This course puts more advanced emphasis on register variation, advanced grammar, and culture. Presentation of language structure, conversation practice, listening, reading and writing exercises will be the mode of the class. The use of films, songs and stories will also be utilized to extend the cultural understanding behind the Swahili language. The course provides students skills to advance in their Kiswahili speaking and writing skills, vocabulary proficiency, and more advanced grammar structures. Throughout the semester, students will incorporate cultural learning through authentic texts, stories, and media that are level-appropriate.

- CSLC 20202/60202: Intermediate Kiswahili II
In the fourth semester of the Kiswahili sequence, students place more emphasis on the productive linguistic skills of speaking and writing, while still maintaining and growing their receptive linguistic skills of listening and reading. Grammar structures covered in this class round out the most commonly used and encountered forms so that students can feel prepared for immersive and authentic exchange with native speakers.
Pre-requisite: Intermediate Kiswahili I or equivalent

This course meets three times per week for 50 minutes (MWF).
