EAP Workshops provide international students, faculty, post-docs, visiting scholars, and staff the opportunity to improve their English language skills and cultural knowledge to support their academic goals. Each workshop is designed to be hands-on with opportunities for demonstration, discussion, and practice.

Managing Culture Shock

Welcome to American culture! How are you coping? Are you still excited and eager to experience American life, or have you had quite enough and long for home? Or, perhaps you have finally acclimated to your host culture. Either way, join us as we explore culture shock through shared discussion. Let's listen, laugh and commiserate as we explore this topic.

Roundtable: Conversations with Successful International Academics in the U.S.

This round-table discussion features three international academics who completed their higher education in the U.S. and U.K and now have thriving careers in the U.S.  Dr. Santiago Schnell, Dean of Science at Notre Dam, Dr. Chaoli Wang, professor of computer science and engineering at Notre Dame, and Dr. Valeria Mora-Hernandez, Ph.D. & coach, share their experiences and strategies to help international students become successful academics and professionals.

Writing an Abstract 

This workshop focuses on specific guidelines for what to include and how to organize the contents of your abstract. After reading samples in this session, participants present their abstract for peer-review discussion.

English Pronunciation Skills & Techniques

Improving your pronunciation includes more than just isolated vowel and consonant sounds. This workshop addresses other aspects of pronunciation that are important for clear communication, such as intonation, pauses, and word stress, as well as techniques for practicing on your own.

It's Raining Cats and Idioms!

English has hundreds of idioms that are used in everyday life, but can be confusing to English Language Learners. This session is the extended segment of the EAP workshop on idioms offered last semester and gives participants a better understanding of English Idioms, focusing on those that are frequently used in the classroom, the workplace, and among peers.
